Why a Single Safe Is Not Enough for Seed Phrase Storage
Households that keep all recovery backups in one location face a concentration risk that a location index alone cannot solve.
A home safe feels secure until the safe itself becomes the single point of failure. Fire, flood, burglary, or a forgotten combination can eliminate every backup at once. Households we consult with often discover — during the inventory stage — that their hardware wallet card, paper backup, and metal plate all sit inside the same fire-rated box.
The Geography Problem
Seed phrase security guidance typically emphasizes redundancy: make multiple copies, store them separately. Few households follow through because “separately” requires deciding where else to put things. A bank deposit box in Incheon costs roughly ₩80,000 to ₩150,000 per year depending on size. A trusted relative in another city introduces access delays. A lawyer’s office raises confidentiality questions.
The location index does not solve the geography problem. It documents where things are so successors can find them. But if every location is in the same room, the index merely records a concentrated risk.
What Separation Actually Means
Meaningful separation requires at least two independent storage environments:
- Different buildings — home and bank, or home and a relative’s residence in another district
- Different access authorities — one location only you can open, another accessible by a designated successor under defined conditions
- Different failure modes — a fire safe protects against fire but not against a single person who knows the combination
During consultations, we ask clients to describe not just where backups live but what event would destroy all of them simultaneously. The answer is often uncomfortable.
A Practical Starting Point
If you currently have one safe, consider this minimum step: move one backup to a second location this month. Document both locations in a simple index — room name, container type, who has access. You do not need a consultant to take that first step, but you do need to actually do it rather than plan to do it.
